Reporting from Ada, Michigan, home of the 2008 State Criterium Championships, where the Men's Cat 4 and 5 groups were combined today for a field of 76 riders.
The race was 30 minutes and 5 laps. After a week off the bike, my goal was to stay upright and finish safely. The course was .7 miles and had a wicked chicane that resulted in at least one crash in the race.
From the start, the pace was accelerated, and while two primes formed temporary breakaway, none ever held until the last two laps. Fortunately, I was in that breakaway of about 20 riders; unfortunately, due to the narrow roads, I was unable to place higher than 17th. However, because they combined the categories, I came in 2nd in Cat 5. We averaged right at 25 mph for the race and it was a great experience to ride with the 4s.
Next week - August 9 - BTR Criterium at 8:00 am in Kalamazoo. I look forward to having more teammates to ride with.

Mountain Bike Update
Also of note, Matt and Jim raced the Big "M" mountain bike race this weekend and placed 2nd and 4th respectively. Great job guys! For those reading who may not realize it, this is the same venue where they hold the Lumberjack 100 and I remember it very well. Hope you enjoyed the hills... (grin).
