Kensington Valley Metropark Results...

Just got this update from Devin on today's race. I know we also have a few folks competing in a 12-hour road race in Illinois this weekend as well, so that will be posted once results come in. Thanks for the update, Devin...

Team,

This morning was cool and foggy at Kensington Valley Metropark, site of the 2008 Trophee des Grimpeurs, the unofficial Michigan Climbing championship, where winners in each category take home the polka dot jersey. By the time of the start at 0800, the fog had burned off and we were ready to race. The category 5 race was 6 laps of a challenging 3.5 mile loop that included 2 challenging climbs. Of course, the finish was on the final climb.

For the first 5 laps, there were a few flyers, but no real breakaway. Speed ranged from a max of 40.9 mph to a min of around 14.9 on the climbs. I recognized a couple of strong riders from previous crits, and never fell beyond 5th place. Of course, it's not where you are during the race that counts, but where you are at the finish. Despite my hill repeats the past three weeks, I came in 9th, but happy with the fact that I finished my first road race.

When I got home, I checked results, and although the "official" TdG results were not posted, I did re check the Ada Crit results and wouldn't you know it, in the Cat 4/5 race for Crit State Championship, it appears as though Team Active Racing can now say that they have both the Road and Criterium Cat 5 State Champions on the team. Danny Wolin for Road and Devin Winton for Crit.

Well, one more big race left for the season - next Saturday's Priority Health Classic in Grand Rapids. Should be exciting as the 4s and 5s race together once again.

Thanks for reading and enjoy your Labor Day holiday.

Busy weekend for Josh...

Our first-year Sport-Class phenom, Josh, had a busy weekend - racing Saturday and Sunday. Below is his recap of the weekend's festivities and he continues to maintain strong standings in the point series. Great job Josh!

This weekend was super busy for me. I raced on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's event was the Maybury time trial for the CPS MMBA series. Locals ran the show taking the top 3 spots in my class (Sport Men 19-29). My overall finish for the day was 4th out of 12.

I missed the podium spot by 10 seconds. That's a kick right in the "you know what". Sunday was a little different but still painful. Sunday's race was at Pontiac Lake. This was a cross country race in which the 30 year olds were let go at the same time as our class. I was under the impression I was leading my class until I saw the final results posted. It turns out that the person who won the class is actually an expert who had raced a couple times earlier in the season and beat 50% of the field, so I'm not too sure why he decided to race in the Sport class, but he did and handed me a 2nd place finish for the day. There were 7 total riders. His time was 1:25, my time was 1:30, and third place had a time of app. 1:34.

It's been over a month since my last win, and I'm getting antsy. I'll be at the Stony Creek Cross Country race where the final Championship Awards ceremony will be held, and I look forward to trying to end on a good note by winning that race, even though I have a firm hold on first place in this series as well, which will make me Sport Men 19-29 State Champion. This also gives me a free entrance into the 2008 Iceman Cometh race in November. Right now, however, I have my sights set on the final two races of the CPS series, in order to accomplish my original goal of winning all three series championships.

The final two races will determine the champion since I am in a very tight battle with the person in second place. I'm looking forward to all of my upcoming races, and have got the urge to train harder than I have all season. I'll keep you posted on my results.

Jonah's Triathlon Update

In typical "Jonah" format, below is an update from our resident Tri-Clydesdale. Who needs the shift key anyway... capitalization is for wussies. Way to go Jonah (although I'll have to take your word on the "kissing your sister" comment - I only have a brother and we don't do that in our family)! LOL, Cap'n Cook

people,

just a jonah update. i raced the lansing legislator olympic tri on the 10th and got 1st clydesdale. i did pretty well overall too and it is a tough course finishing with a trail run. Then a couple of days later, running fit put on an evening tri in brighton on wednesday the 13th. amazingly enough, it sold out. i raced age group in this one and barely landed on the podium at 4th. it was tough competish though, lots of eastside badasses showed up and times were fast. i missed 3rd by 3 seconds and 1st by 2 minutes. being that close and missing it is like kissing your sister, but more motivation for next time. next race for me is not until sept 7, the michigan tri championship. they have a relay division too, for anyone that may be interested.

namaste,
jonah

Weekend in the dirt - Ft. Custer Time Trial

Well, it was yet another successful weekend for the Team Active Racing crew as we had several racers participate in the Fort Custer Time Trial event on Sunday. Daryn raced in the Elite category and placed 8th - great job Daryn. Josh raced in the Sport 19-29 class and was one of 15 riders in his category. While his race started off rather "bumpy" (going over the handlebars and eating some dirt on the mogul section), he was able to recover and take 2nd for the day. The event was Tailwind's MTB Time Trial Championship and with overall finishes of 1st, 1st, 7th and today's 2nd he became the Series Champion! With two more series championships remaining (for other race promoters), Josh is looking forward to upcoming races and is headed to Maybury and Pontiac Lake in the weeks ahead.

Results:
JIM G. 4TH EXPERT 1:04
DARYN 8TH ELITE :58 MIN
MATT G. 11TH ELITE :59 MIN
KEITH W. 2ND SPORT 1:09
MIKE S. 8TH SPORT 1:11
ANGIE 1ST SPORT 1:16
JOSH 2ND SPORT 1:04

Our very own "Lieutenant Legs", Angie, also was out for the day on her new Scalpel and with the assistance of Shonger through some expert coaching on technical sections, she was able to take first in women Sport 25 - 39. Below is a recap from Angie herself:

Team Active did AWESOME yesterday!!

On Saturday, Mike Shong and I rode the course (probably a bad idea because I hadn't ridden for almost a week and a half) and I desperately needed to get used to my new Scalpel, since it was the first time I had it on the trails. He's a great teacher and showed me how to get up that rock 'wall' on the course and gave plenty of great tips on improving my mtn biking skills. Of course, not being used to the bike, I found I couldn't make it up several of the large climbs (I tried more than once to Mike's humor) and had to walk a few times and did donate a bit of blood to the trails.

Race day was beautiful but I got started and was quickly passed by Mike (started 30 sec behind me) and realized that this was not going to be a good ride. I was just dying, legs were sore, breathing hard and I had to slow down to almost a walk at one point. And I finally got passed by a woman, Jody, and just watched her ride off. And I still couldn't make it up the large climbs, darn it. Well, all of a sudden I see Jody in front of me again, but thought, eh, she's got me beat, I am just going to ride behind her. Then she was going really slow and I passed her (really slow) and just struggled on.

A huge thanks to everyone who cheered near the end. And thanks to Jim for riding next to me for the last, torturous part on the grass uphill - I didn't have much left. :-) What fun! And then when I went to check the results I looked at the board and well crap, I won! Sport Women 25-39.

Looks like it's Expert next.....

Congratulations to everyone for an awesome weekend!!!

Great job to all the Team Active Racers for another successful day on the trails. I also would like to congratulate Mike Groat for placing 2nd in the team 12-Hours of Pando race on Saturday. He was on a team of four racers competing in the "vets" category (35 and over) and had also intended on doing the FC Time Trial, but something about getting home at 3 am on Sunday left him sleep deprived and not interested in racing in another few hours.

Good riding by all,
Cap'n Cook

BTR Criterium Update

We had some team members race in the BTR this weekend. Racers included Devin, Jim, Joe and Mikey with Danny taking photos. They all rode very well today - perfect weather. Devin and Jim were at or near the front quite a bit today with Jim taking some long pulls. At the end Joe came across the line in second followed in 4th by Devin. Jim finished in the pack. Rumor has it Jim put in some great pulls for the team... Great job guys! Below are some shots from the day.

Devin Takes #2 in State Crit Championship!!!!

Dateline: Saturday, August 2, 2008

Reporting from Ada, Michigan, home of the 2008 State Criterium Championships, where the Men's Cat 4 and 5 groups were combined today for a field of 76 riders.

The race was 30 minutes and 5 laps. After a week off the bike, my goal was to stay upright and finish safely. The course was .7 miles and had a wicked chicane that resulted in at least one crash in the race.

From the start, the pace was accelerated, and while two primes formed temporary breakaway, none ever held until the last two laps. Fortunately, I was in that breakaway of about 20 riders; unfortunately, due to the narrow roads, I was unable to place higher than 17th. However, because they combined the categories, I came in 2nd in Cat 5. We averaged right at 25 mph for the race and it was a great experience to ride with the 4s.

Next week - August 9 - BTR Criterium at 8:00 am in Kalamazoo. I look forward to having more teammates to ride with.

Devin

Mountain Bike Update
Also of note, Matt and Jim raced the Big "M" mountain bike race this weekend and placed 2nd and 4th respectively. Great job guys! For those reading who may not realize it, this is the same venue where they hold the Lumberjack 100 and I remember it very well. Hope you enjoyed the hills... (grin).
